How do you manage the change from one auto insurer to another?
Let’s start with a simple rule:
Don’t wait until the last minute before shopping round for a new policy.
You should always leave yourself enough time to get comparative quotes and check out the policies on offer before making a change. Jumping blindly from one insurer to another is not good. Some insurers offer discounts for loyalty if you stay with them. You will often get better discounts from new insurers if you have a clean record and have been steady with one or two insurers. If you jump ship every year, auto insurers will take their money from you and give you as little as possible.
Remember that, if your old policy runs out before you have a new one in place, you cannot drive your car on the road. Indeed, in some states, there is a fine for every day you are without insurance.
It’s not good to have more than one policy in force at the same time. Get your timing right. Either cancel your old policy the moment you have your new policy in place or only start your new policy when your old one expires.
